4th Grade Reading Passages

Look at both the length and the topic before selecting a passage. An unfamiliar subject can make a text feel harder, so distinguish difficulty with the words from difficulty understanding the background information.

Choose a sentence with several parts. Read it aloud in phrases, then discuss how the punctuation helps the listener follow the idea. Revisit unfamiliar vocabulary after the initial sample.

Ask the reader to explain a word using clues from the surrounding sentences, then check whether that meaning fits the rest of the paragraph.

This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.

Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
