Choosing a fifth grade passage
Invite the reader to choose a topic and explain why it interests them. Use the opening paragraph to check whether the vocabulary and sentence structure make the passage a useful practice choice.
Try a focused rereading
Reread a paragraph with a particular listener in mind. Try emphasizing different words and discuss how that changes the meaning or tone, while keeping the words accurate.
Talk about the text
Ask for a short summary that leaves out minor details. Have the reader identify which sentences carry the most important information.
This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.
Use the reading to plan your next step
Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
