1st Grade Reading Passages

Start with a short section your reader can attempt comfortably. Where the catalog includes Track A and Track B, keep the track label in view when choosing a passage; the two selections may differ even when their titles are similar.

Choose a sentence to read together after the first attempt. Point to each word as you reread it, then let the child try the sentence again. Keep the practice short enough to finish with a sense of accomplishment.

Ask: Who or what was this passage about? Invite the reader to point to a word or sentence that helped them answer.

This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.

Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
