How to do a one-minute reading speed test
- Choose a passage. Use a text that fits the reader’s current skills. Keep a second copy for the person listening. Scholar Within provides printable reading assessment materials.
- Time the reading. Start a stopwatch when reading begins and mark the stopping point at one minute. If the reader finishes earlier, use the actual elapsed seconds.
- Count the words reached. Include words in the attempted portion that were missed or misread. Do not count a repeated word twice as an additional passage word.
- Enter word errors separately. Use the scoring rules of your chosen assessment. Then enter the word count, elapsed seconds, and error count in the calculator.
Keep instructions and conditions consistent if you want to compare readings. Avoid prompting during the sample and note whether the passage was new or already practiced.
The difference between WPM and WCPM
Words per minute (WPM) is the number of words attempted divided by elapsed seconds, multiplied by 60.
Words correct per minute (WCPM) is the number of words attempted minus word errors, divided by elapsed seconds, multiplied by 60.
Accuracy is the number of words read correctly divided by words attempted, multiplied by 100.
Example: 100 words in 60 seconds, with 5 errors
The reading rate is 100 WPM. After subtracting the 5 word errors, the adjusted rate is 95 WCPM and accuracy is 95%.
A rate is only as reliable as the timing and counting behind it. This calculator does not listen to the reading or identify errors automatically.
Oral reading and silent reading are different tests
This workflow is for reading aloud with someone listening. A silent reading-speed test measures how quickly a person moves through text without speaking. Those rates are not interchangeable, and speed alone does not show how much the reader understood.
For children, consider accuracy, phrasing, passage difficulty, and understanding alongside rate. Do not treat an adult silent-reading average as a target for a child’s oral reading.
