Roberto Clemente
When Roberto Clemente was a boy in Puerto Rico, he helped his father work in the sugar cane fields. He liked to play baseball with his friends. His family never guessed that he would be one of the best baseball players ever.
Clemente was born in 1934. He dreamed of being a runner in the Olympics. Baseball scouts noticed him playing. They put him on amateur teams, where he played shortstop. When he was 18, he started playing professional baseball in Puerto Rico.
