Imagine turning pink because of what you eat. Imagine being able to sleep while standing on one leg! Both of those things would be normal to you if you were a flamingo.
The word “flamingo” probably comes from the Spanish word for “flame.” That fiery pink color certainly is hot! There are six different types of flamingos. They live all over the world. You can find them in India, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

When flamingos hatch from an egg, they are not pink. Flamingo chicks are grayish red. They turn pink as they grow up. The color comes from their food. A flamingo’s diet is mostly shrimp and algae. Both those things help turn the birds pink or orange. In American flamingos, the darkest color is on their bills.
Flamingos also eat small insects and shellfish. They gather their food in a unique way called “filtering.” The flamingo scoops its beak into the mud at the bottom of a lake. Then it squeezes out the water and mud. It swallows whatever is left in its mouth.
Water is a flamingo’s favorite place to hang out, often with other flamingos. These are very social birds that like to stay in groups. They also like to fly in a flock. At zoos, their wing feathers are cut so they can’t escape.
There’s another unusual thing about how flamingos look. They have incredibly long, skinny legs. It looks like they’re walking on stilts. That makes it even more surprising that they always stand on one leg. They even sleep that way.
Bird experts aren’t sure why flamingos do this. Some think it saves them energy. Others think it helps keep them warm. Whatever the reason, it’s fun to watch!
