Match the text to the purpose of the session. A short oral sample can help you hear how the reader handles complex sentences, while a separate conversation can explore interpretation and understanding.
Try a focused rereading
Choose a dense sentence or paragraph and explain its meaning in everyday language. Reread the original with phrasing that helps a listener follow that meaning.
Talk about the text
Ask the reader to describe the author's perspective or purpose and support the explanation with a passage detail. Consider whether another interpretation is possible.
This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.
