7th Grade Reading Passages

Let the student preview the title and consider the topic before selecting a text. When recording a first reading, note any preparation so a later comparison reflects similar conditions.

Select a paragraph where the author's tone is noticeable. Read it aloud with attention to pace and emphasis, then explain the choices using specific words from the paragraph.

Ask the student to make an inference and identify the detail that supports it. Discuss what the text says directly and what the reader is adding.

This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.

Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
