Choosing a sixth grade passage
Choose a manageable excerpt for reading aloud, even if the full passage is longer. Keep the purpose clear: observing accuracy and phrasing is different from asking the student to read silently for information.
Try a focused rereading
After reading, mark places where a pause helps separate ideas. Reread that section and compare how easily a listener can follow it. Keep any timed first reading separate from this practice.
Talk about the text
Ask: How does the author organize the information? Look for a sequence, a comparison, or a cause-and-effect relationship in the text.
This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.

Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
