Over five thousand years ago, Chinese farmers first began growing rice. Today it is grown all over Asia and Africa. American farmers grow rice, too. Explorers brought rice plants to America four hundred years ago.

The best place to grow rice is an area that gets lots of rain. Rice needs more water than most other crops. Most rice farmers flood their fields to give the plants enough water and also keep pests away.
