Choosing a second grade passage
Choose a passage with a topic the reader wants to explore. Listen for places where individual words interrupt the flow, and return to those words after the reading rather than turning the first attempt into a speed race.
Try a focused rereading
Pick two or three connected sentences. Model a pause at the end of each sentence, then ask the reader to reread the same section with attention to punctuation.
Talk about the text
Ask the reader to tell you what happened first and what came next. For an informational text, ask for two things they learned.
This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.
Use the reading to plan your next step
Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
