What the fluency assessment measures
Reading speed
See the reading rate in words per minute. Use it alongside the passage level and accuracy to understand the sample.
Reading accuracy
Review words the automated analysis identified as missed or misread. Listen again to check what the reader actually said.
The reading itself
Replay the saved audio to hear pauses, phrasing, and expression. The recording adds context that a single score cannot provide.
How to take an oral reading fluency test
- Set up with an adult. Create or sign in to an account and complete the applicable authorization steps.
- Choose a suitable reading level. Start with a passage the reader can attempt comfortably. The selected level describes the passage; it is not a measured placement score.
- Read aloud. Use a quiet space and the device microphone. Let the reader finish without coaching during the sample.
- Review together. Look at the rate and accuracy, then listen to the recording before deciding what to practice next.
Reading speed is one part of reading fluency
A fast reading with many missed words means something different from an accurate reading with long pauses. Consider the text, the reader’s familiarity with it, and the conditions of the session when interpreting either result.
Fluent Within’s automated measurements are estimates and can contain errors. An oral reading sample does not by itself establish reading comprehension, diagnose a learning difference, or replace a professional evaluation. Ask the reader to explain what happened in the passage as a separate conversation about understanding.

Before you begin
