Choosing a third grade passage
Use a passage to connect reading aloud with explaining ideas. Check that the reader can attempt the vocabulary without becoming overwhelmed, and note whether the text is new or has been practiced before.
Try a focused rereading
After a first reading, choose one paragraph to reread in meaningful phrases. Ask the reader which words belong together and where a short pause would make the meaning clearer.
Talk about the text
Ask: What is the main idea of this section? Which detail in the passage supports your answer? Encourage the reader to return to the text.
This discussion is a separate activity from measuring reading speed. Give the reader time to think and look back at the passage.
Use the reading to plan your next step
Grade labels describe how the collection is organized, not a diagnosis or placement result. If a passage feels frustrating, try a more accessible selection. For a timed sample, keep the first reading separate from later practice.
