Wattle and Daub Huts

Wattle and daub huts have been found in Asia, Europe, Australia, and America. The oldest ones are from 6,000 years ago. They are simple, with only one room. Later, builders used wattle and daub to make fancier houses.

A whole village or tribe helped make the huts. The first step was to collect many thin twigs. In some regions, they used wooden slats. People wove the twigs or slats together. This formed a large, flat screen called a “wattle.” The wattle was tied to stakes or logs to hold it up.
