A Brief History of Hockey
Hockey was first written about in a newspaper article in 1877 when rules for ice hockey were published. The rules were copied from a field hockey guide. The sport was first played on grass, so it was originally called field hockey. The first puck used during outdoor games in the 1800s was made from frozen cow dung. The sport has changed a lot over the last 142 years!
The origins of the modern game go back much earlier. Histories of many cultures describe playing games with curved sticks as far back as ancient Egyptian times.
