Hummingbirds

The hummingbird is a very tiny type of bird. They have bright, colorful feathers and long pointed beaks. Hummingbirds can be green, blue, red, brown, orange, or purple. They are named for the humming sound made by their wings. Some of the smallest species beat their wings more than 80 times per second. They have been recorded diving at speeds exceeding 22 miles per second.

There are over 325 species of hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are only found in the Americas. Most species like tropical climates. They live in Central America, South America, and throughout the Caribbean. Some hummingbirds live as far north as Alaska. No hummingbirds are found in Europe, Asia, or Africa.
