The Havasupai

The Havasupai are one of the most remote Indian tribes in America. Havasupai is pronounced, “hah-vah-soo-pie.” Havasu means “blue-green water” and pai means “people”. They are known as “The People of the Blue-Green Water”. These Native Americans have lived in the Grand Canyon for over one thousand years.

They live in Supai village, which is the capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Their village is eight miles below the south rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. They must hike a path to and from their village. There are no cars. Everything they need must either be carried in by foot over the eight miles to the village or packed in by mules.
